Summary of position:
Three-year training program to become a Guide Dog Mobility Instructor Full‐Time salaried position
In state and out of state travel with overnight or extended stay as necessary
1‐2 weeks of travel approximately 12 times per year, while placing guide dogs with clients
Duties include but are not limited to:
Clean kennels as necessary
Learn and apply guide dog training methods
Obtain knowledge of canine physiology through research, prepared text, and hands‐on experience. Obtain knowledge of various types of blindness and visual impairment through research, prepared text, and hands‐on experience.
Learn about orientation and mobility from certified O & M specialists
Attend various lectures/discussions and events with peer professionals
Study canine behavior
Participate in the interviewing of potential clients
Participate in the routine, annual or client requested follow‐up
Attend seminars, conferences, and conventions as necessary
Participate in international educational opportunities
Observe blind students in training
Participate in a secondary and primary capacity in the instruction of blind students
Keep appropriate records
Clean and maintain training vehicles & training equipment
Demonstrate Guide Dogs at PR functions as required
Assist with the puppy program as required Obtain knowledge for professionals in fields related to guide dogs and blind or visually impaired people
All other duties as required
The position requires:
2- or 4-year college degree
Ability to work outside in all kinds of weather
Walk 7-10 miles a day
Able to lift 50 pounds
Dog experience required
Willingness to work in city environments
A valid driver’s license
